Have you ever wondered how to hack your podcast marketing and grow your audience? Today, in episode number 16 we find out.

Simply put: This strategy is both marketing and sales. You are building awareness, inducing interest, creating desire, helping visitors through the consideration process, requesting action, and converting them into listeners. And you’re doing it all on one highly targeted and focused page.

We’re often asked, “Does anyone read those long-form sales pages?” My borrowed answer is, “Buyers do.” The same goes for podcast landing pages. In this case, the buy-in is someone choosing to engage with your show.

But this doesn’t require you being “salesy”; we’re not slinging used Lemurs; no shenanigans; no funny business. What you are building is a place visitors can go, receive a clear and concise message, and make the decision to become a subscriber.

This is something we do with our corporate clients and those in the JumpStart Bootcamp. It’s an old-school tool called a long form sales page; you’ve probably heard of them. But instead of selling Ron video tools he doesn’t need, we’re selling people on becoming a new subscriber to your podcast.

How to Hack Your Podcast Marketing with a Landing Page:

  • Why use a long form sales page to promote your podcast
  • Reimagining sales pages to promote a podcast
  • The basic structure and purpose
    • Who are you
    • What problem you solve
    • Who do you solve the problem for
    • What value do you offer
    • What do you want visitors to do next
  • Case studies demonstrating the value of this technique for podcast marketing
  • Objections to and arguments for using this style of podcast marketing
  • The SEO value
  • Using paid traffic and advertising to grow podcast listeners
  • The anatomy of a podcast landing page

Recently, we discussed the basic rules of attracting money. And we covered why money is important. They are the mindsets one must first adopt before attempting to make money. (Hint: Don’t hate money or treat money like a dirty word.)

Today, we’ll walk listeners through the nine most popular and proven ways to monetize a podcast. These are the models we’ve seen work consistently.

This is a simple nuts and bolts discussion of different business models. We made sure to only include podcast business models most people could implement easily with the greatest benefit.

That brings us to an important thing to note: This is not an exhaustive list. There are a ton of different podcast business models. Most are complicated or time-consuming. And neither of those are good when you’re trying to get the money hose turned on at first.

When you’re starting out, it’s not the time to try to reinvent the wheel. We believe in starting simple first, focusing on results, and then progressing forward. And we’ll tell you how without abstractions or mental backflips.

So strap in, tune in, and let’s talk making money with your passion…

How to Monetize a Podcast Topics Discussed:

  • Using affiliates for a quick money win and what NOT to do
  • The truth about making money with Patreon through a real investigation
  • Premium feeds and how they work
  • Content upgrades and other premium offerings
  • Building an elite community that pays
  • Parlaying your podcast into speaking gigs

Have you ever wondered what are the rules for attracting money? Today, in episode number 14 we share our fundamental money rules for because you might be chasing it away.

[subscribe]

They say it makes the world go ’round. They say it can’t buy happiness. They say a lot of things about money.

But money can make life easier, and it can make your passion feasible, workable, and liveable. Think of money like you would a battery: it stores energy waiting for your use.

You might have a short in your system, though…

We live in a binary state: Attracting money or repelling money. The state of repelling comes from imperfect information and wrong mindsets. For example, you cannot attract what you hate.

It is not uncommon to one moment hear a person disparaging money. A short while later they are lamenting a problem and sharing a pain that is best resolved through the appropriate application of money.

So you end up with diametrical feelings and wants. When you enter this state, the wheels you have in motion begin to grind on one another till the two seize up. Then nothing moves forward and your dreams whither.

This isn’t to say you should love money as a means of attracting it. There is a fine line we share and expound upon in the episode. You should instead appreciate what it can do for you and your passion.

Walter Wriston famously once said, “Capital will always go where it’s welcome and stay where it’s well treated. Capital is not just money. It’s also talent and ideas. They, too, will go where they’re welcome and stay where they are well treated.”

7 Rules of Attracting Money Discussed and Explained:

Have you ever wondered how to motivate listeners to take action? Simple, use calls to action. Today, in episode number 12 we explain how.

[subscribe]

Podcasters often tell us they can’t get listeners to engage. They lament low comments, social shares, and sales.

The first question we ask them is this: “Are you using clear, concise, and compelling calls to action?” The answer is usually no.

Listeners won’t do things simply because you asked nicely. (Ok, maybe 1% will if you’re lucky.)

You could hold the answer to all their pains and struggles. But if you don’t tell them what you want them to do in a way they understand, they will not do it. Now you’ve done them a great disservice. You’ve hidden away the answer because you didn’t know how to communicate correctly.

Here’s the thing: You must tell people what you want them to do, when you want them to do it, and what’s in it for them if they take action. This is the anatomy of calls to action, in a nutshell.

And some strategies of using calls to action in combination with friction removal can produce a 3x BOOM in results. We discuss in this episode. So…

To get the full-monty on calls to action, listen to this episode now 🙂

Calls to Action Topics Discussed:

  • What are calls to action
  • Why are they important for motivating your audience to do something
  • Understanding the difference between features and benefits
  • Using CTAs in your midrolls and outros
  • Understanding ad fatigue and how to overcome it
  • Why we don’t recommend pre-rolls
  • The exact number of times your CTA needs to be said to be most effective
  • How to lube up and remove the friction from all your CTAs so they get a boost
  • A case study on the CTA friction remover that created a 3x boost in membership signups

Have you ever wondered how to work efficiently with podcast guests and avoid disaster? Today, in episode number 11 we find out!

Most podcasts are interviews. That means working with a podcast guest is a cornerstone skill of the majority of podcasters.

But this can be tricky. You’re likely they working within the confines of someone else’s schedule, temperament, commitment to the project, and social skills.

With a few pointers, it’s not as daunting a task as it might first seem. The first thing to remember is that they are a person just like you. They have similar hopes, fears, challenges, and crazy schedules you do.

After that, it’s all fairly easy. And we’ll show you how…

Managing the Relationship with your Podcast Guests:

  • How to best approach someone you don’t know with an interview request
  • When and how to tell them you’re a fan of theirs
  • Using form emails with a personal flair to make contacting potential guests a snap
  • Using online calendaring tools to make scheduling a breeze
  • When and how often to remind guests of your agreed upon scheduled recording session
  • Using a guest guide to sooth their fears and get everyone on the same page
  • The pregame rapport building techniques to warm guests up
  • Saying thanking and building a long-term relationship

The number one thing that kills podcast is the editing. That raises the question: Should you skimp or even skip editing?

What’s eating up all your time is not the act of edit. The problem is what you’re reading.

Podcast Editing That Ate Your Brains:

  • The time Aaron spent 21 hours editing an hour-long podcast and it still sucked
  • Editing out verbal ticks
  • Umms, Ahs, So, and other filler words
  • Focusing on the content
  • Destroying the slow and boring parts even when you think they’re important
  • Putting your interview questions in a special order
  • How to make guests sound better and want to be a regular on your show
  • When an edit won’t save bad content
  • The ethical obligation to edit

Most podcast focus on a niche topic with the intent of promoting something.

But what would it be like to listen to an episode with a niche topic of one man? And better yet, what if the niche topic was one man asking his friends what they thought of him? Does it sound like comedy might ensue?

You’d be right.

The JustEricson Podcast is a podcast by comedian Ericson Just. From his site he tells visitors more about who he is:

I spent the first quarter of my life in Philadelphia trying to find love only to realize I had it all along in my passion for performing. So, I moved out of my girlfriend’s bedroom and made a bee-line to Los Angeles and have been getting myself in and out of trouble by speaking my mind ever since. I’ve been called dry, honest, irreverent, confrontational and that’s just my comedy. I’ve personally have been described by a whole slew of colorful adjectives and nouns on my podcast where I interview someone new every Thursday about my favorite subject: myself.

On JustEricson:

    • Surprising your guests with the topic of your show
    • Decoding the avatar
    • Where’s the money?
    • Using a podcast as a personal brand building platform
    • Giving listeners a way to connect with outside the podcast and what it can do for you
    • Ron invents a new term: Outserps
    • Should you give your guest a way for the listeners to connect with them?
    • When Twitter makes sense in lue of a mailing list
    • What makes good album art

If you played a game with no rules or clear objectives could you win?

If you don’t know what your job is or what the expectations are can you do it successfully?

Crafting Podcast job descriptions helps as your show to succeed in one significant way: It manages expectations of the person doing the job.

And avoiding headaches with a solid organizational foundation makes building a successful podcast that lasts achievable.

Building and running a lasting podcast takes proper management. There are a lot of different skill sets needed and a lot of tasks to keep track of so things get done on time.

The tasks involved in starting and running a podcast must be broken down into specific job roles. Those roles must then grow into podcast job descriptions.

You may be doing this all by yourself right now, granted. Or you may be doing this with a co-host. You might even work with a full team. Regardless, it’s good to know what tasks belong to what job role.

And the time to make podcast job descriptions is before you need them. The alternative is to wait till a blow-up happens or someone quits the team in frustration.

Podcast Job Descriptions Topics Discussed:

  • Job Roles and Descriptions
    • The Executive Producer / Showrunner: The shot caller
    • Podcast Producer: The person who makes things happen and herds the cats
    • Host and Cohost: The talent
    • Content Editor: The person who cuts the boring bits
    • Audio Engineer: The person who makes the hosts sound good
    • Show Notes Writer: The person who scribbles a description
    • Graphic Artist: The person who makes pretty images
    • Transcriptionist: The person who writes down all the words
    • Webmaster: The person who posts the show and manages the website
  • 3 example case studies of Podcast job roles and production processes in action

Have you ever wondered how to have a great podcast cohost relationship? Today, in episode number 6 we find out how to podcast with a cohost without destroying your show or friendship.

[subscribe]

Here’s the thing: A podcast cohost can be a major asset to a show. They may skyrocket the energy level, help share the burden of the workload, add knowledge you don’t have on topics you want to cover, or just make the whole process less of a lonely slog.

Some people are exceptional at delivering an entertaining and engaging monologue. Then there’s the 99.9% of the rest of us. A cohost can inject life into a show by creating a dynamic back-and-forth atmosphere. They can also bring specialized knowledge making each episode much deeper and juicer.

A podcast cohost can also save a show from being just another interview podcast. (Don’t let Ryan Holiday catch you doing that – or do because if it’s great who cares.)

But here’s the rub: proceeding with the choice to have a co-host on your podcast can also be disastrous. And a show can go down in flames because you decided podcasting with a cohost was the way to go.

There are a few common causes. These destroyers of shows include lack of communication, unmanaged expectations, dereliction of duties, planned and unexpected life changes, and creative differences. We could go on. However, the resolutions and solutions just aren’t that difficult.

And worst of all, friendships can be destroyed. Yeah, it sucks to say. It’s sad to write. And the aftermath is worse. You started off with high hopes and a we’re-going-to-take-on-the-world-through-our-Wings-with-West-Wing-Podcast! and devil-may-care attitude. Then you never spoke to each other again. (Let’s not do this, ok?)

The solution is nearly at hand, though. Just listen to this episode, do a little work, and you’ll save the world from another failed show. (Do it for the kids.)

Podcast with a Cohost Successfully Topics Discussed:

  • Ron wonders aloud if the ISS has a honeymoon suite
  • Two real-life examples where podcasting with a cohost nearly destroyed a successful show
    • What caused the breaks
    • How we saved friendships
    • How the show moved forward with a careful show format and brand pivot
  • Knowing why you want a cohost
  • Defining roles ahead of time
  • The different types of roles, how they’re each different, and how they help
    • Cohost
    • Podcast Producer
    • Business Partner
  • Communication, Communication, Communication
  • Handling unthinkable gracefully: the breakup
  • Developing a contingency plan for the lose of your cohost

Copywriting sages can often be heard sharing the wisdom of spending nearly as much time on a headline as the body copy. This is for a good reason: Great headlines get people to read the body.

…Stay with me here. The use of headlines does directly translate to success with podcasting…

And this is extremely important because if the reader doesn’t read through, they will not take the intended action. The reader taking action can mean the difference between a successful sales campaign and a complete waste of months worth of work. (And then Ron’s mad because he doesn’t get his astronaut ice cream.)

The newspaper industry also knows the importance of headlines. You’ll hear managing editors yell out, “Headlines sell papers.” (Or if you’re Ron, “The headline made me click on the useless BuzzFeed article!”)

Guess what.

Your episode titles are headlines. And they’re the first thing existing listeners and new listeners interact with. If an episode had a less than exciting and exciting title, your episode will get skipped.

You’re fighting for “ear share.” Ear share is how much of a person’s listening time you get. Podcast listeners have a lot of options these days. And if you fall face first on the title, you’re listener will opt to listen to someone else’s episode.

Yes, even if they are a subscriber, the majority will pass up your latest episode.

But there is a caveat we should acknowledge here: Die-hard fans will proceed forward without further enticement. These are the superfans who will download whatever or buy whatever you’ve got. However, these superfans are extremely rare no matter who you are or what you have.

So check out this episode to hear how to increase podcast downloads like a pro.

How to Increase Downloads Topics Discussed:

  • Ron ponders astronaut ice cream
  • A lesson on writing with the intent of enticing readers from a 10-time New York Times Best Selling author
  • The crazy results from a 3-month podcast title split-test
  • Crafting podcast titles like a high-dollar marketing and sales copywriter
    • How headlines impact newspaper sales
    • How headlines are used to sell goods and services
    • Why you open specific emails and ignore others
  • The side outstanding benefit great podcast titles have on your social media likes and shares
  • The how-to of writing to increase your podcast downloads and shares
    • Five guidelines for writing better podcast titles
    • Conveying value and an opportunity cost if they don’t listen
    • The one thing every pro-copywriter keeps on their desktop
    • A pro-level time-honored practice for getting better headlines
    • How to avoid guesswork and know you’re crafting exceptional podcast titles
  • Finally thoughts and words of encouragement

Podcast sound quality confounds and wastes the time of most new podcasters. We’re here to put your mind at ease and get you past that particular hurdle. Aaron, the audiophile of the team, and Ron, the pragmatist of the team, discuss how good your audio has to be. (Pisst, probably not as perfect as you think)

[subscribe]

Your podcasting adventure guides will also share practical action steps you can take to improve your podcast’s sound quality. And we discuss how to get the best podcast sound quality for your stage of podcasting.

Here’s the thing: Your microphone is not as important as you’ve been led to believe. And your podcast’s audio quality is not what’s holding you back from growing a giant audience. They may not care all very much, in fact.

And the significant sound problems often have simple fixes. None of these solutions include spending $500 to $5,000 on a microphone. Most answers are relatively cheap and sometimes only mean getting a little creative!

We’ll share what’s hurting your sound, thoughts, tips, and even give you an example of how expensive microphones aren’t usually the answer.

So what are these answers? Find out in this episode…

Podcast Sound Quality Topics Discussed:

  • Ron laments no one being able to hear you scream in space
  • How to determine what good enough is
  • What expensive high-end microphones pick up and sound like
  • What to really focus your attention to instead of microphones
  • How content impacts audience retention and growth
  • Causes of bad audio quality
  • How your recording space affects your show in ways you’ve not thought of
  • Distracting noises you didn’t know were annoying your audience
  • Simple podcast sound quality fixes
  • Using rack effects in post-production to smooth out your podcast sound
  • Equipment that can make a big difference

We pose a question: Why do podcasters seem to hate money and not focus on how to monetize a podcast? Your hard work should reward you. We explain how.

Many podcasters and pundits lament the lack of money in podcasting. Some give the excuse of saying it is simply the nature of the beast. Other’s further belay their fear by telling you to focus on podcasting for the love of podcasting.

We say this is total crap, plain and simple!

When you monetize a podcast you incentivize yourself to keep doing the hard work. And you’re able to pay for needed equipment, marketing, and other things that can grow your audience and make the show better.

But when a podcaster doesn’t figure out how to monetize a podcast, they eventually left feeling like the only person paying for a big dinner over and over.

Making money isn’t evil or bad. And it doesn’t mean you have to be a “sell-out” or “Salesy”. It just means podcasters need to provide value to their audience and receive value in return.

We discuss overcoming the problem and how to monetize a podcast in detail in this episode…

Monetize a Podcast Topics Discussed:

  • Why so many podcasters are scared of the money talk
  • Common excuses you may be falling victim to
  • The easy mistake of not asking for money
  • How some podcasters come off as panhandlers
  • The reality of making money with Patreon as a podcaster
  • Giving supporting listeners value for their money
  • Ways to monetize a podcast without being “salesy” or “slimy”
  • When to find or accept a podcast sponsor and things to keep in mind
  • Developing your own product the podcast’s audience actually wants

Have you ever wondered what it takes to build a successful podcast that lasts? Today, in Episode Zero of On Podcasting we find out.

We believe everyone should be able to create a meaningful podcast, share valuable information and stories, inspire their listeners, and engage with their tribe. We also believe anyone who wants to should be able to turn their passion into something that pays them for their hard work, time, and energy.

Podcasting can be very complicated and time-consuming. There’s figuring out the hardware, setting up a website, getting media hosting, and deciding on the right software. That’s just to name a few things to untangle. Then there’s the things people hardly talking about, how to grow a successful show that rewards you for your efforts.

We share with you actionable information to clarify and demystify.

On Podcasting will come in four delicious episode flavors: Evaluations, Discussions, Examples, and Case Studies.

Evaluations episodes are where we take a listener submitted show and episode, review, then share our thoughts on how to make it better. We’ll also discuss what we liked about the show the host should keep doing or do more of.

Often, it’s hard to take in advice and implement it. So through these evaluations, you’ll be able to hear what to do and what not to do by going through someone else’s show with us.

Discussion episodes are where we share our thoughts on different aspects of podcasting. These can focus on topics of performance techniques, recording gear, or show promotion.

Example episodes are similar to discussion episodes, but they contain real-world examples of podcasting hits and misses. These episodes focus on performance techniques and sound quality fixes.

Case studies are some of the most fun episodes with the biggest takeaways for listeners. We’ll share the results of an experiment and how the results were achieved. We’ll even include any tools and resources needed for you to repeat the results in your own podcast.

Who are the hosts of On Podcasting?

Great question!

The Hosts of On Podcasting

The hosts of the show are Ron Davis and Aaron Frankel.

Who is Ron?

He’s a polymath, which is a pretentious way of saying I know a little about a lot of different stuff. He’s been a Programmer, photographer, paramedic, and podcaster. I’ve turned two of my passions into successful podcasts, Photography with the Model and Photographer Podcast, and Emergency Medical Services into Confessions of an EMS Newbie.

Ron is also an avid toastmaster and I apply those public speaking skills to podcasting. And since podcasting is a technical thing, he also applying my ten years of programming to podcasting as well.

Who is Aaron?

He’s not just a podcaster talking about podcasting. Aaron is also a podcaster with a show outside the industry.

But to back up for a moment, Aaron is the former professional sidekick, marketing director, and staff writer for best-selling celebrity author Neil Strauss.

Back to his podcast, it’s called In The Rabbit Hole and it’s an Urban Survival Podcast. The show was launched in 2010 and featured by Apple Podcasts. And the In The Rabbit Hole podcast regularly shows up in the top 200 news and politics podcasts.

Since then, Aaron has gone on to produce several hit branded podcasts for companies. Most of those shows made New and Noteworthy in their first week of airing.

Now that you’re acquainted…

Who is On Podcasting For

On Podcasting is a podcast designed just for you: Someone who wants to build a successful podcast that lasts.

It’s not for the armchair warriors, nitpickers, and naval gazers. On Podcasting for podcasters who want to get things done. It’s meant for podcasters looking to monetize their show, make most of their time, money, and energy when creating and maintaining a podcast.

Now it’s time to commit to your success! Click on one of the podcast app buttons below to subscribe here now:
